{"id":449,"date":"2016-01-12T06:20:41","date_gmt":"2016-01-12T12:20:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pkeating.com\/?p=449"},"modified":"2017-01-31T17:05:19","modified_gmt":"2017-01-31T23:05:19","slug":"update-on-astros-hacking-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pkeating.com\/?p=449","title":{"rendered":"Update on Astros Hacking Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>January 31, 2017 Update:<\/em>\u00a0<em>ABC News reports that Major League Baseball completed its investigation of the hacking incident and (i) ordered the St. Louis Cardinals to pay $2 million to the Houston Astros within 30 days and (ii) transferred the Cardinals&#8217; top two draft picks in the 2017 draft to the Astros.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>July 25, 2016 Update: On July 18, 2016 the court sentenced Chris Correa to 46 months imprisonment and to pay $279,038 in restitution.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/pkeating.com\/?p=296\" target=\"_blank\">prior post<\/a>, I discussed the FBI investigation into whether the St. Louis Cardinals hacked into the Houston Astros\u2019 computer network.\u00a0 At that time, the FBI believed that a Cardinals\u2019 employee was able to do so because the Astros\u2019 General Manager previously worked for the Cardinals and re-used Cardinals\u2019 computer passwords in the Astros\u2019 computer system.<\/p>\n<p>On January 8, 2016, the Cardinals\u2019 former scouting director, Chris Correa, pled guilty to five counts of Unauthorized Access of a Protected Computer.\u00a0 The maximum penalty is a $250,000 fine for each count and five years in prison.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdtx\/file\/811921\/download\" target=\"_blank\">Plea Agreement<\/a>\u00a0signed by Mr. Correa states that he was able to access the email and computer database accounts of an Astros employee (presumably the GM) because that employee used a password that was a variation on a password previously used at the Cardinals.\u00a0 Mr. Correa agreed that the government could prove that he accessed an Excel file of the Astros\u2019 scouting list of every eligible player for the 2013 MLB draft, which disclosed how the Astros ranked each player.\u00a0 He also accessed the Astros\u2019 scouting reports on players and notes of the Astros\u2019 trade discussions.<\/p>\n<p><em>Photograph by JML78 displayed pursuant to the license located at:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/2.0\/legalcode\"><em>https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/2.0\/legalcode<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"twttr_buttons\"><div class=\"twttr_followme\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/@_PatrickKeating\" class=\"twitter-follow-button\" data-show-count=\"false\" data-size=\"default\"  data-show-screen-name=\"false\"  target=\"_blank\">Follow me<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>January 31, 2017 Update:\u00a0ABC News reports that Major League Baseball completed its investigation of the hacking incident and (i) ordered the St. Louis Cardinals to pay $2 million to the Houston Astros within 30 days and (ii) transferred the Cardinals&#8217; top two draft picks in the 2017 draft to the Astros.
